Tracing the course of European Hellenism

Since the Renaissance, Greek thought has exerted a powerful influence on the European imagination. It has remained a reference point for western thought and culture and has contributed significantly in shaping the European tradition of rational humanism and critical reflection. This lecture will draw on literature and art to offer an outline of the European preoccupation with Greek culture, from the Renaissance to the present day, and will explore the reasons behind this ongoing fascination.
