In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians

Lecture by Leonard Janiszewski and Effy Alexakis

This lecture chronicles the depth and diversity of the Greek presence in Australia over the last 200 years. Although we may never know who was the first Greek on Australian soil, by the early 1800s a few Greek convicts, sailors and adventurers had certainly arrived. From the early 1850s, gold stimulated the first real wave of Greek immigration. In the 1890s, formal Greek communities emerged, and by 1939 around 15,000 Greeks resided in Australia. By the early 1980s, post-war mass migration had brought some 250,000 Greeks, and with the Greek economic crisis Australia has again become a major destination.
