The future of the Greek language in Australian education

Greek language teaching seems to be going through a severe crisis at all levels of the Australian educational system and in all states. On the basis of the experience of the last twenty years, Professor Vrasidas Karalis coordinates a round-table discussion with all active university teachers of Modern Greek in NSW on the problems, perspectives and dangers facing Greek language teaching in Australia. Could Greek disappear as one of the official languages of the Australian curriculum? What should we do to stop the decline of Greek enrolments? Is there any way to rekindle the interest of young people in learning Greek? The academics of our state talk about their experiences and analyse the problems while at the same time they put forward solutions for the dissemination and promotion of Greek language as a language of cultural awareness and social cohesion.
